This month we catch up with Ines Klein from U+I Building Studio to chat about their Renegades Cafe Wine Bar project.

Cafe Culture: How did you become involved with the Renegades project?
Ines: “The Renegades owners used to have another cafe in Alexandria where we went for years when we worked in this area and also went back after we started our own business. We got to know the owners very well and were very happy when they asked us to help them with their new cafe in Mascot”.

Cafe Culture: Tell us about the overall design
Ines: “The Renegades Cafe Wine Bar is located on the corner of Bourke and Coward St in Mascot”.
“The weird shaped space encouraged us to create different zones with various seating arrangements suitable for all day dining and drinks. Patrons can watch the hustle and bustle at the front counter while sitting on the banquet seating or at the large timber table and benches. Or they can relax in the armchairs and sofas in the quieter rear part of the cafe that opens to the balcony”.
“To achieve a bright and inviting atmosphere the materials have been minimised to predominantly concrete and plywood. An eye-catching point of difference are the bold orange splashbacks and the graffiti artwork winding through the space”.

Cafe Culture: Tell us about your collaboration with Bernadette at Cafe Culture
Ines: “The clients and I went to the showroom to see different options for the chairs and tables. Bernadette suggested alternative options, so we had a good selection. At the end the furniture harmonized perfectly with the interior design”.

Cafe Culture: What is your favourite item on the Renegade menu and why?
Ines: “Our favourite on the menu is the daily changing special Risottos, just delicious!”
